Mark 14:53-65

53Jesus Is Tried before the High Priest Matthew 26:57-68; Luke 22:54-55; John 18:13-14, 19-24Then they took Jesus to the high priest. All the high priests, elders, and scribes had gathered together.Matt 26:57; Luke 22:54; John 18:13 54Peter followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the servants and warming himself at the fire.

55Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council
Or Sanhedrin
were looking for some testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death, but they couldn't find any.Matt 26:59
56Although many people gave false testimony against him, their testimony didn't agree.

57Then some men stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58“We ourselves heard him say, ‘I will destroy this sanctuary made by human
The Gk. lacks human
hands, and in three days I will build another one not made by human
The Gk. lacks human
hands.’”Mark 15:29; John 2:19
59But even on this point their testimony didn't agree.

60Then the high priest stood up before them
Lit. in the middle
and asked Jesus, “Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?”Matt 26:62
61But he kept silent and didn't answer at all. The high priest asked him again, “Are you the Christ,
I.e. the Messiah
the Son of the Blessed One?”Isa 53:7; Matt 26:63

62Jesus said, “I am. AndMatt 24:30; 26:64; Luke 22:69

‘you will see the Son of Man

seated at the right hand of the Power’

and

‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’”
Dan 7:13

63Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we still need witnesses? 64You have heard his blasphemy! What is your verdict?” All of them condemned him as deserving death.

65Some of them began to spit on him. They blindfolded him and kept hitting him with their fists and telling him, “Prophesy!” Even the servants took him and slapped him around.

54Peter Denies Jesus Matthew 26:57-58, 69-75; Mark 14:53-54, 66-72; John 18:12-18, 25-27Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.Matt 26:57-58; John 18:15 55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them.Matt 26:69; Mark 14:66; John 18:17-18

Luke 22:63-71

63Jesus Is Insulted and Beaten Matthew 26:67-68; Mark 14:65Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him.Matt 26:67-68; Mark 14:65 64They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, “Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?” 65And they kept insulting
Or blaspheming
him in many other ways.

66As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council.
Or Sanhedrin
Matt 27:1; Acts 4:26; 22:5
67They said, “If you are the Christ,
I.e. the Messiah
tell us.”

But he said to them, “If I tell you, you won't believe me,Matt 26:63; Mark 14:61
68and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me. 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
Or the power of God
Matt 26:64; Mark 14:62; Heb 1:3; 8:1

70Then they all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God?”

He answered them, “You say that I am.”Matt 26:64; Mark 14:62

71Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!”Matt 26:65; Mark 14:62

John 18:13-14

13First they brought him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.Matt 26:57; Luke 3:2 14Caiaphas was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people.John 11:50

John 18:19-24

19The High Priest Questions Jesus Matthew 26:59-66; Mark 14:55-64; Luke 22:66-71Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his own teaching. 20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue or in the temple, where all Jews meet together, and I have said nothing in secret.Matt 26:55; Luke 4:15; John 7:14, 26, 28; 8:2 21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said. These are the people who know what I said.”

22When he said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Jesus on the face and said, “Is that any way to answer the high priest?”Jer 20:2; Acts 23:2

23Jesus answered him, “If I have said anything wrong, tell me what it was.
Lit. about the wrong
But if I have told the truth, why do you hit me?”
24Then Annas sent him, with his hands tied, to Caiaphas the high priest.Matt 26:57
